Policy for Tokens

Attendance in Lectures and Workshops is not a hurdle and does not directly affect your grade. However by attending in person you gain “tokens” which you can spend to get extensions on assignments.

Extensions

Extensions will be granted at a rate of one half day extension per use of 3 tokens. The half day extensions will be until the next timeslot that it is either of 10AM or 10PM, such that the extension is for greater or equal to 12 hours (We don’t want you pulling all nighters!)

For example:

  • For a due date at 5PM on a Monday, 3 tokens would extend the due date until 10AM on Tuesday, and 6 tokens would extend it until 10PM on Tuesday.

Gaining Tokens

Participation in Lectures and workshops will gain tokens proportional to your longest continguous weekly attendance streak.

  • For lectures you will gain tokens at a rate of 2 multiplied by the length of your longest contiguous lecture attendance streak.
  • For workshops you will gain tokens at a rate of 1 multiplied by the length of your longest contiguous workshop attendance streak.

You can also use tokens to extend you maximum streak for both of workshops and lectures. For Lectures, this will cost 2 tokens per week you want to extend your streak, and for workshops it will cost 1 token.

For example:

  • If you participate in Lecture 1, 2, 4, 5, 10 and then none of the other lectures, your longest contiguous streak is 2.
  • Hence you will gain 2 * 2 = 4 tokens.
  • Suppose you spend 2 tokens to extend your streak for Lecture 3.
  • Now your longest contiguous streak is 5 so you gain 2 * 5 = 10 tokens, less the 2 tokens you spent. Hence you now have 8 tokens.

Canvas Integration

To facilitate the Token System, everything is controlled from within Canvas, and executed by an automatic script. Processing the results of your request, will have a slight delay until the next scheduled script execution. You will get an automatically generated feedback comment on the “Token Use System Messages” canvas assignment when this happens.

Note: The current processing time is set to be every 30 minutes, and is subject to change. If you do not recieve an outcome within one day, please contact Kacie Beckett kacie.beckett@unimelb.edu.au, as it is possible something has broken and we have not noticed!

Lecture Participation

The format for submission vary on a weekly basis for Lectures. It can be may also be Canvas Quiz or other form of interaction.

Workshop Participation

On Canvas there is a quiz titled Week {N} - Workshop Participation for each week. Your tutor will provide a 19 character password (including the dashes) to type into the text box during the workshop in the form XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX

  • For example: ab12-cd34-ef56-gh78

You will only be marked as participating if you submit during the workshop time, and this quiz is locked to only allow submissions while on campus. Please ensure you are connected to university W-Fi without any VPN to ensure you have access. Some web browswers like Safari will also hide your real IP Address, so ensure you have any feature’s like this disabled, atleast temporarily, or use a different web browser if you are not able to submit the quiz.

Please use no special formatting, and include the ‘-‘ characters.

There will be a unique code for every workshop, so that you are able to attend any workshop to get marked off attendance.

Extending your maximum streak

For each of lectures and workshops there is a corresponding canvas quiz where you can select which weeks you want to freeze.

Selecting Extensions

As explained above, you can use tokens to request extensions. Note that the extensions should automatically update inside gradescope when the script next runs. If your extension has not updated or seems incorrect, please let us know.

System Messages

To view the token system messages you have two equivalent ways of finding it inside canvas:

Option 1:

Option 2:
